US DEMOCRATIC presidential contestant Stephen Douglas had the right message but wrong cause when he ran and lost against Abraham Lincoln in 1860.
His defeat indirectly triggered the American Civil War, however, it also marked the beginning of the end of American slavery. He died in 1861.
