The news that Labour is sending volunteers to assist Kamala Harris’s campaign is an outrage. In what world is it acceptable for a foreign political entity to interfere in the democratic process of a sovereign nation? If the Tories were shipping off their operatives to help Donald Trump, the shrieking harpies would be crying foul, calling election interference. But it favours Kamala Harris, suddenly, the lines of legality and ethics are blurred, if not outright erased.

I don’t like it, clearly, but in some ways it’s laughable

Inarticulate, policy-challenged Kamala Harris has bumbled her way through high-stakes interviews, fumbled crucial debates, and remains woefully underqualified in foreign affairs. Her rise to prominence seems to stem from the Democratic establishment’s desperation to support her as their only option against Trump. It is undeniable the candidate thought unelectable just months ago needs all the assistance she can get.

But let’s not pretend this is a standard political exchange. While political volunteering abroad isn’t unheard of, this is an organised hit squad, sent by a political party in power, aimed squarely at influencing the outcome of a presidential election in a foreign country. Labour’s intervention here isn’t some harmless cultural exchange, it’s a direct attempt to manipulate the future of America’s highest office.

The hypocrisy is staggering. From Hillary Clinton to Joe Biden, and now Kamala Harris, the left has endlessly accused Donald Trump of collaborating with foreign powers – Russia, in particular. They pursued years-long investigations into alleged interference, branding Trump a traitor for supposed conspiracies with foreign adversaries. Yet, open interference by the British governing party in this election is now deemed acceptable? Where is the outrage now?

Moreover, this isn’t just unethical – it could be illegal.  Foreign nationals participating in American political campaigns in such a direct manner risks violating US election laws. While the volunteers are not supposed to be paid, who is underwriting their travel and other expenses? Has the generous Lord Alli offered to pay?

The stakes of this election are immense. Key states like Virginia and Pennsylvania are in play, yet Labour volunteers are being sent to sway voters – not out of genuine concern for American democracy, but to protect their ideological allies. Should Trump win, the bilateral relationship could be severely strained. Will these Labour activists take responsibility for the potential diplomatic fallout?

I don’t like it, clearly, but in some ways it’s laughable. The world knows the Labour party didn’t win through persuasion or vision. It failed miserably in inspiring British voters, who instead turned out in droves to punish the Tories for their own incompetence. The irony is rich when you consider the Labour organiser’s rallying cry to volunteers to come to Kamala’s aid: ‘Let’s show those Yanks how to win elections!’ What are they going to say on the doorstep?

Rather than campaigning in Nevada and Virginia, Labour volunteers should stay home and fix their own broken politics. The last thing America needs is guidance from a party that is experiencing such a jaw-dropping plunge in popularity so soon after election. This ridiculous ploy could potentially further strain the bilateral partnership at a time when its strength and solidarity are critical to opposing the ever-expanding ambitions of the enemies of the West. It is irresponsible and alarming.
