CRACKS are opening within NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s government over her ruthless response to COVID cases.
Deputy Premier & National Party leader John Barilaro has sided with Labor leader Chris Minns in criticising Ms Berejiklian’s efforts to impose even more aggressive lockdowns.
- Premier pressured into curfews by media – not health advice.
- Labor, Nationals & Liberal backbench MPs demand curfews be scrapped.
- Curfews do nothing more than hurt the well-being of the community.
With 12 metropolitan areas already under nightly curfew, Ms Berejiklian plans to extend the pain into regional NSW – placing the central western city of Dubbo high on her list.
Her government’s deputy leader, however, has finally pushed back saying on Monday that her approach wasn’t working.
MEDIA PRESSURE
“Curfews don’t work,” Mr Barilaro said, suggesting they were only ever imposed due to media pressure on Ms Berejiklian.
“If you look at the numbers since we put the curfews in, nothing has occurred, nothing has changed, numbers continue to rise,” he said.
“You would question its ability to work.”
Ms Barilaro said he was against further curfews.
“I know it does nothing more than hurt the well-being of that community,” he told Sky News First Edition this week.
Mr Barilaro joins Labor Party calls – as well as some Liberal Party backbench MPs – demanding the Premier abolish curfews.
MIXED EVIDENCE
According to The Australian newspaper yesterday many have slammed her decision to impose them without any formal written advice or supporting data.
On announcing the curfews, even NSW’s chief health officer Kerry Chant conceded there was only “mixed evidence” that they were effective.
Labor leader Chris Minns said Ms Berejiklian needed to start listening to common sense.
“The Premier needs to listen to the NSW opposition, health advice, the millions in western Sydney and her own deputy and remove these curfews,” he said.
Cumberland City Council mayor Steve Christou, who represents Sydney’s greater Parramatta area, said Ms Berejiklian’s curfews were the “harshest restrictions ever imposed on Australia”.
NSW One Nation leader Mark Latham accused State premiers of acting like “megalomaniacs” in their COVID response.
“They love the publicity, the power and the control over people,” he wrote in The Spectator Australia magazine.
“Don’t delude yourself into thinking these megalomaniacs will relinquish control when we reach 70-80 per cent adult vaccination.
“The virus will [still] circulate and the premiers will still lockdown for extended periods.”
He accused Ms Berejiklian of having more positions on freedom than the Karma Sutra.
“Last year we were the envy of the world,” he said. “Now we are in semi-permanent lockdown while Europe and North America are returning to normal lifestyles.”PC

“Curfews don’t work,” Mr Barilaro said. Really? It has only taken them this long to state something so blindingly obvious, something the nations that did nothing knew from the start. Like masks, mandated tests and vaccines……don’t work, because Covid is the flu, a weak flu at that. Not only do they not work they are against the Constitution. Why should people obey the law at all any more given politicians believe they do not have to while their gestapo beat down on the people protesting their loss of freedoms.
