California Congressman Robert Garcia on C-Span

California Congressman Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has wasted little time threatening the Trump administration following his party’s victories in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

“LAWYER UP,” Garcia wrote on X, signaling that Democrats are preparing an aggressive campaign of congressional investigations against President Donald Trump and his senior officials.

Garcia, who is poised to chair the powerful Oversight Committee when Democrats take control of the House in January, has already been preparing investigations into the president, his family and his administration.

“We’re not starting from scratch here,” Garcia told Punchbowl News ahead of the election.

“There’s an enormous amount of work that has happened that is public, and there’s an enormous amount of work that’s happened that we’ve been quietly working on for many months.”

His stated targets include the Trump family’s business interests, cryptocurrency ventures, immigration enforcement operations and the administration’s handling of documents relating to Jeffrey Epstein.

With control of the committee, Democrats would gain the power to issue subpoenas, compel testimony and demand documents, potentially dragging administration officials into months of hearings and costly legal disputes.

Other Democrats have issued similar warnings.

Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon posted a one-word message on X: “Subpoenas.”

Rep. Delia Ramirez of Illinois also signalled her intention to target administration officials.

“Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what’s up?” she wrote. “Clear your schedule.”

“Thank you, Mr. President. Our thank you will come in January – with subpoenas,” wrote Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari.

The threats raise the prospect of prolonged left-wing witch hunts and lawfare campaigns, Washington as Democrats revel in the power of holding the House and the Senate.

Although congressional committees cannot bring criminal charges themselves, they can refer potential wrongdoing to federal prosecutors.

The possibility of impeachment proceedings also remains, although removing Trump would require a two-thirds majority in the Senate.
