Republicans are facing the possibility of a devastating defeat in the U.S. House of Representatives as an election-night estimate attributed to NBC News shows Democrats potentially capturing a commanding majority in the 2026 midterm elections.
According to the reported NBC estimate, Democrats are on track to secure 248 House seats, compared to just 187 for Republicans, a massive 61-seat advantage for the Democrat Party.

If the estimate holds, Democrats would finish 26 seats above the 218 required to control the House, giving them substantial power to obstruct President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda during the final two years of his second term.
And the warning signs were already flashing before Americans headed to the polls.
The Cook Political Report warned on October 30 that Democrats were positioned to flip between 12 and 25 Republican-held seats, potentially giving the party as many as 240 seats. Its analysis suggested that Republicans were struggling to regain momentum in several critical battleground districts.
Meanwhile, Decision Desk HQ and The Hill’s November 2 forecast projected Democrats winning 241 seats to Republicans’ 194, assigning Democrats an 84% probability of capturing the House.
As of roughly 9:30–10:30 PM EST on Election Night (Nov. 3, 2026), Democrats have several confirmed or projected House flips and calls in previously Republican-held or competitive seats.

DDHQ has shown Democrats with roughly +9 to +10 flips in some balance-of-power updates, with a projected final range in the mid-to-high 240s (e.g., ~246–248 seats in some snapshots). Overall House control has been projected for Democrats by DDHQ, NBC, CNN, and others, with NBC estimating ~244 Democratic seats (191 Republican).
