House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) said last week that he has no plans to return to leadership of either the House Judiciary or Oversight Committees.
Jordan will be termed out as the top Republican on Judiciary after serving as Ranking Member from March 2020 until he took over as Chairman in January 2023, when Republicans took back control of the House.
Unlike other Republicans, he does not intend to seek a waiver of the three-term limit for committee leaders.
Previously served as Ranking Member on the Oversight Committee for one year starting in 2019 and ending when he took the leadership role on Judiciary. He could serve at least two more terms as chairman or ranking member of Oversight, but doesn’t plan to, he said.
In an interview with Politico last week during the RNC midterm convention in Dallas, Jordan agreed that he’s term-limited from his role on the Judiciary Committee.
When asked if he would instead return to Oversight, Jordan said, “No, I don’t plan to do that. There’s other people who are very interested in Oversight.”
This comes as at least five Republican lawmakers are likely contenders for Oversight leadership, including Brandon Gill (R-TX) and Tim Burchett (R-TN), according to Punchbowl News.
“I just want to help— I just want us to win,” Jordan said of his decision not to seek a leadership role.
He noted that he’s still running for office and “going to, you know, go represent the people of the fourth district,” when asked if he would serve in Congress without a leadership role.
Asked if he would challenge Speaker Mike Johnson for Speaker in the event that Republicans retain control of the House, Jordan said, “No, I’m focused on winning, plain and simple, focus on winning the majority.”
He then joked that he had “three more interviews” when asked about his next move.
