In what is being described as ‘woke madness’, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland, recently removed Egyptian mummies from public display.
The remains of the priest Egyptian Nekht, in his painted coffin, a mummified male head, a mummified right hand from the Valley of the Kings, and a mummified right foot have all been removed from display.
In lieu of the historical objects, a sign now states the human remains were removed “as a mark of respect,” citing a draft human remains policy that requires “documented and informed consent” from the deceased individual or their descendants.
Finding relatives of Nekht, thought to have lived sometime between c. 1985 and 1797 BC, would be close to impossible.
Additionally, the Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow has draped the mummified body of Lady Shep-En-Hor, which has been on display for over 200 years, so visitors can no longer see the remains, while the ornate sarcophagus remains on view.
The museum said she “deserved privacy in death.”
Scottish Tory MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife Murdo Fraser told The Daily Mail, “This is woke madness at its most ridiculous.”
‘Even Egyptian mummies are now being cancelled by a society so obsessed with modern sensibilities that it has lost all sense of perspective.
‘People visit museums to learn about ancient civilisations, not to see history hidden away because it fails to meet today’s ideological standards.
‘Glasgow’s museums should be showcasing our history, not quietly removing it to appease the latest trend in political correctness.’
Member of the Scottish Parliament, Reform’s Thomas Kerr noted, “3,000 years of history manoeuvred by a Glasgow Museums diversity officer.”
He shared on X, “So behind me is Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, probably Britain’s wokest museum, and that’s a big, big say.”
“Because yesterday they announced they were getting rid of the Egyptian mummies and, get this folks, because they did not give consent to be in there.”
“You couldn’t make this crap up.”
“Kids come to this museum to learn about history, to learn about culture, everything that has to do with the world.”
“The idea that you remove mummies because 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 years ago they didn’t sign a permission slip to say their body should be on display is absolute bonkers.”
“It’s left-wing politics gone nuts and that’s whats happened here in Glasgow…it’s why we need Reform.”
