Former DeRidder, Louisiana, Mayor Misty Roberts walked out of jail Monday after serving a 90-day sentence that local residents rightly called a slap on the wrist for a child predator.
Prosecutors sought up to 17 years behind bars but the convicted former mayor received only three months in jail, probation, and suspended sentences.
State records confirm Roberts was released on September 7, according to KALB-TV.
Roberts, now 44 and a mother of two, was convicted by a jury in March of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior with a juvenile.
The crimes occurred in July 2024 at an alcohol-fueled pool party she hosted at her home for her own son’s birthday while she still held office.
The victim was her son’s 16-year-old friend. She faced up to 17 years. Judge Kent Savoie gave her 90 days in jail, a $5,000 fine, two concurrent five-year suspended sentences, five years of probation, sex-offender registration, therapy, and random drug screens.
The Gateway Pundit reported on this case in August 2024, when Roberts abruptly resigned and was charged days later. We followed with additional reporting in March 2026 on court documents showing her panicked texts after the incident.
The jury that convicted her deliberated less than an hour. That did not produce a serious prison term.
Beauregard Parish prosecutors asked the judge to impose the maximum. They later filed a motion to reconsider the sentence after a KPLC investigation showed Savoie had cited more than 30 prior parish sex-crime cases, every one of which ended in a plea deal, not a jury conviction like Roberts received.
On August 31 the judge admitted he had misdescribed those comparison cases, then denied the request anyway and left the 90-day term in place. Roberts was released September 7.

Neighbors KALB spoke to said the sentence was a disappointment.
“A slap on the wrist for a child predator, because at the end of the day, that is exactly what it is,” said DeRidder native Kari McGee.

“That’s an insult to the actual victim and the family,” Clark said.

The victim’s aunt’s letter was read by the district attorney who tried the case. Her 14-year-old son was at the party the night of the incident. She described how watching his cousin endure the ordeal caused him significant anxiety and emotional distress.
The victim’s sister spoke next, saying her brother called her the morning after the incident, crying, panicked and disgusted. She said her brother will face long-term effects from the incident and asked that Roberts be ordered to pay for his therapy.
The victim’s oldest sister followed, saying Roberts abandoned her motherly instincts and could have spared her own children — and other child witnesses — from a trial had she accepted a plea deal. She ended her statement with a pointed remark:
“None of this would have happened if she had asked, ‘How old are you?’”
