A close call for Johnson, a great enthusiast of Kiev’s war effort.
During these 5 years of war, many people wonder how it is that, in the supposedly ‘full-scale invasion’ of Ukraine by Russian forces, the passenger train lines between Ukraine and Poland have continued to function undisturbed.
In fact, there’s a non-stop stream of political and business leaders crossing into Kiev, in what can only be described as a measure of restraint on Moscow’s part.
However, it may well be that those days are over.
Today (13), it arises that former British PM Boris Johnson was on a train returning from Ukraine to the Polish border when a train just behind his was struck by a Russian drone.

The Telegraph reported:
“The former prime minister was travelling back from a security conference in Kyiv when he was woken up by guards at 5am on Sunday and told to prepare for an evacuation.
The warning was issued after another passenger train behind Mr Johnson’s train was hit in Volyn, just over a mile from the Polish border.
An all-clear was given shortly afterwards when no further drones were detected, enabling Mr. Johnson’s train to continue its journey. Mr. Johnson was unharmed, The Telegraph understands.”

Besides Johnson, his train carried former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s top adviser Günter Sautter, as well as officials from UK, France and Italy.
“The attack came two kilometers from the Polish border, according to Ukrainian railway officials, raising concerns about Russian strikes reaching increasingly close to Nato territory.
Mr. Johnson was in Ukraine alongside advisers from other European nations for the 2026 annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy, a security conference where Western officials held discussions with Volodymyr Zelensky’s government about possible peace negotiations with Russia.”

BBC reported:
“No casualties were reported after the Russian strike, which hit the train’s engine.
Johnson and some of Europe’s most senior security advisers, including the UK’s Jonathan Powell, had passed along the same line on their way back from a conference in the capital, Kyiv.
Russia said Sunday it struck ‘railway infrastructure’ in western Ukraine, but the former PM said ‘I don’t know what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning’ and asked ‘When are we going to give them the air defenses they need?’”
