French island of Corsica – Wiki Commons
It’s an explosive mixture of armed separatism and anti-overtourism struggle.
In the paradisiacal French Island of Corsica, buying a vacation home demands not only a lot of money, but also a lot of courage and a lack of good judgment.
For years now, masked and armed rebels have been bombing million-dollar vacation homes owned by mainlanders or foreigners on the island.
Since October 2023, 34 homes across 20 towns were bombed or torched in a single, disturbing, overnight spree.

The New York Post reported:
“Corsica’s armed independence movement, which doesn’t appear to have killed anyone, has kept up a steady campaign of attacks on second homes, mostly empty vacation properties owned by mainlanders and foreigners. Another home was blown up as recently as March 2026, according to the New York Times.
since October 2023, separatists have bombed or burned dozens of second homes across the island (34 in one overnight spree alone, another as recently as March 2026), part of a campaign to keep property out of the hands of outsiders and preserve it for locals.”
The paramilitaries from the National Liberation Front of Corsica want outsiders off the island, as they left it pretty clear last month:
The Telegraph reported:
“About a dozen armed, hooded members of the clandestine Corsican National Liberation Front-Union of Combatants (FLNC-UC) appeared in a video published on Thursday, carrying submachine guns and sniper rifles.
‘Until our national rights are recognized and respected, we have only one message for them: stay at home’, the group’s leader said in a distorted voice, warning those who ignored the message not to consider themselves safe.”
