We are ordered to believe MAGA is ripping itself apart. That is not analysis. That is a sales pitch.
There is no conservative civil war. There is the same old war against conservatives, dressed in a MAGA hat and hoping nobody checks the tag.
This ‘Civil War’ Is a Costume, Not a Crackup
Younger patriots love this country and want to save it. What they often lack is institutional memory. For years, conservatives learned from Rush Limbaugh with school in session from noon to 3 p.m. every weekday. We had The Washington Times, a Fox News that still remembered why it existed, and an internet that had not yet been turned into a carnival of impersonators.
Those classrooms taught pattern recognition. Forget the pattern, and you fall for the trick.
Remember the Battle of the Bulge, when English-speaking German soldiers slipped into U.S. uniforms? That is the play. Infiltrators do not announce themselves. They praise the host, copy the slang, then peel off one conservative position at a time.
Every ‘Crisis’ Ends With the Same Command: Move Left
The script never changes. There was a thunderstorm. Can’t nominate conservatives. There was an earthquake. Better not nominate conservatives. Older patriots have seen this magic act too many times. It looks like an 8-year-old trying to vanish a coin.
Leftists have been impersonating what they are not since Karl Marx. More than a century later, too many newcomers get whupped because they do not recognize the scam.
Rush Limbaugh named it: seminar callers. Leftists trained to sound conservative, flatter the host, then object to just one Republican policy. Lesser hosts panic about ratings and back off. Gullible listeners second-guess themselves. Rinse. Repeat. Attack the next principle. Then the next.
The Clinton White House and the Democratic National Committee later professionalized the tactic. The Obama-era Organizing for America machine put it online. The method did not evolve because it did not have to.
If They Talk Like a Democrat, They Probably Vote Like One
The internet version wears the same costume. Posters swear they voted for Trump, then recite lines no Trump voter would ever utter. Their accent gives them away. The threat “I will stop voting Republican” usually comes from people who never voted Republican in the first place.
They complain that Trump promised X and failed to deliver it. Real Trump voters do not talk like that. Ronald Reagan did not get every policy he wanted. Every patriot has watched activist judges, the left-wing press and congressional Democrats block reforms the public demanded — then try to destroy the people who attempted those reforms.
Trump never promised guaranteed outcomes, no matter how much bravado filled a rally. Nobody thought this would be a cakewalk. Washington was always going to fight dirty. Voters could have chosen a seminar speaker. They chose a brawler who hits the other guy with a chair because they knew the other guy would not fight fair.
Half the “broken promises” now being waved around were never campaign planks. On Iran, Trump’s hawkish streak is not new. He has talked about confronting Tehran for decades, even while selling “no new wars.” Hoping to avoid another forever war is not the same as pretending Iran’s 47-year campaign against the United States would politely disappear. As Winston Churchill explained “You might not be interested in war, but war might be interested in you.”
AstroTurf Is Older Than the Tea Party — and Older Than MAGA
A decade ago, speaking to the Northern Virginia Tea Party, I described how lonely conservatism used to be. When my mother was in Eagle Forum and I started activism in 1984, we were few and far between. Then came the Reagan Revolution, the Ross Perot insurgency and the Tea Party flood. The country changed like night and day.
I also warned that the new wave included first-timers who did not know how the patriot movement actually wins: elections, legislation, persuasion. Frustrated newcomers who had never run a successful campaign were ready to quit — or, as some put it, reach for their guns.
During the Clinton years we called the fake lawn AstroTurf. The left builds plastic grassroots so it can claim flyover country has abandoned conservative policy. Tiny cells once posed as “carpenters for socialism” or “bricklayers for socialism,” five or 10 people acting like thousands. No movement of that kind survives without deception.
A Broke Party Does Not Get to Lecture Anyone About ‘The People’
Wish-casting is the polling cousin of the same fraud. Surveys often tell us what the left wishes were true.
Look at the Democratic National Committee. In 2025 it took out a $15 million loan and put its Washington headquarters up as collateral. By mid-2026 the committee was underwater. The Republican National Committee sat on more than $128 million in cash and no debt. That is not a popular revolt against MAGA. That is a broke party selling a story.
Experienced conservatives remember how the machine slimed Oliver North, Robert Bork, Raymond Donovan, William F. Buckley Jr., Barry Goldwater, Joe McCarthy and Rush Limbaugh himself. Search “seminar callers” and you still find the smear archive. The Tea Party was lied about the same way. So were Rand Paul, Sarah Palin, Christine O’Donnell, Ken Buck, Sharron Angle and Joe Miller. The charge was never really the point. Derailment was the point.
Opportunists Can Wound You Without Joining the Other Side
Then come the high-wattage defectors. Tucker Carlson is not a leftist. He is something more familiar: a gifted critic who discovered that breaking with Trump after the Iran fight pays in attention. Soul-less opportunism and actual leftism are not the same disease. The result can still be the same — confusion in the ranks and a media chorus insisting MAGA is eating itself.
Government schools teaching snowflake ideology also taught that the past does not matter. Never has there been a special snowflake quite as special as the newest eligible voter, born just in time to cast an uninformed ballot. Those who remember the last 40 years have to face-palm at the confusion.
The Real Fight Is Not MAGA vs. MAGA. It Is Memory vs. the Con.
The conservative movement is not in a civil war. It is being worked by an old operation: impersonation, fake grassroots, selective amnesia and a press that recites the script.
The people who lived through Rush’s classroom, the Reagan years, the Tea Party and the first Trump term have seen this movie. The ending does not change because a new crop of posters claims they “used to be MAGA.”
Recognize the uniform. Ignore the accent. Fight the real opponent.
