According to a new study by Princetonians for Free Speech (PFS), Princeton University has reached a level of political nirvana that college campuses across the country dream of….an academic bubble that is entirely left-leaning.
The study indicates that 98% of political donations from administrators and faculty went to Democrats or Democrat-affiliated groups. As for donations to Republicans or affiliated groups? Nothing.
The study, prepared by PFS by Iron Light, examined Federal Election Commission records of individual contributions for the 2023–2024 cycle and matched them to a roster of Princeton faculty assembled department by department.
Among the 818 faculty members studied, 101 made a federal contribution during the 2023–2024 cycle. Ninety-nine leaned Democratic, none leaned Republican, and two were Independent. By dollars, $300,747
went to Democratic recipients, $1,270 to independent recipients, and zero dollars to Republicans.
Our study is the first of its kind on Princeton faculty contributions. There have been two similar recent studies at Yale – one, like ours, based on FEC report data and one based on voter registrations and other data. A Harvard Crimson report was based on a survey of faculty. While different methodologies were used, the results were remarkably similar, especially in the percentage of Republican/conservative faculty, which varied from 0 to 2.3%.
By comparison, according to many polls, the U.S. voting population is roughly 30% each Democrat and Republican and 40% independent. We certainly do not argue that faculty should mirror such ratios, nor do we argue that registrations or contributions are exact measures of faculty thinking. Furthermore, we know that, while our study correctly shows that only 2% of reportable contributions went to independents and 0% went to Republicans, there are of course some independent and Republican faculty at Princeton.
Law professor Jonathon Turley notes:
“Political contributions are one measure that helps gauge the degree of ideological orthodoxy and intolerance in higher education. While some academics simply do not make contributions and may still hold conservative views, the study still offers another insight into the political preferences of those who do make such contributions. The study does not mean that we can assume that the number of academics with conservative or libertarian values is zero. (There are obvious outliers such as Robby George). However, few would dispute that it reaffirms the extreme imbalance of ideological views at this and other universities.”
“Professors often express shock at the thought that there would be any political or ideological litmus test for hiring. I have also opposed such measures. However, the hypocrisy is crushing. Today’s faculty are responsible for a near-complete ideological purging of their ranks. They have created a hostile environment for anyone with conservative or libertarian viewpoints, including students who rarely have the opportunity to hear from a professor from a center-right perspective at most schools.”
While Princeton does not seem to have room for Republicans, they have no issue embracing a former high-level Iranian Regime official as a professor.
Seyed Hossein Mousavian, a Middle East security and nuclear policy specialist at the university and a former Ambassador of the Islamic regime to Germany, worked at Princeton for 15 years.
Despite calls for the University to remove Mousavian from the staff, he instead “retired at his own request.”
