by SCOTT JOHNSON – AUSTRALIA’S e-safety commissioner – and American-born feminist – Julie Inman Grant has again refused to front-up before the US Congress.
She was initially requested to attend in November 2025 by US House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan.
- She is safeguarding pornography while banning government criticism.
- Inman Grant is an American “e-Karen” who exercises more power than was granted by her commission.
- She is a stepping stone to complete censorship.
The Republican representative, an advocate of free speech, described Inman Grant as a “zealot for global takedowns”.
He remains concerned by Australia’s internet censorship laws.
THREAT
In particular, he points out Anthony Albanese’s Under-16 Social Media Ban. He is adamant that this is a threat to Americans and their right to free speech.
While being the nation’s senior public servant responsible for enforcing Labor’s censorship policy, Inman Grant is also widely derided as our “e-Karen” who silences free speech.
The ALP cites Inman Grant’s bans as a measure to protect children.
Critics, however, see this as a stepping stone to complete internet censorship noting that porn sites are not included in her policy requirements.
Other examples include the self-publishing platform Substack which has introduced age-verification requirements thus prompting some writers to leave the platform.
As of late-January 2026, there have been no further enforcement actions from Jordan about Inman Grant’s failure to attend US Congress (subpoenas or contempt proceedings) however, the matter remains a point of controversy over the right to free speech.
Australian Senator Alex Antic has opposed the Australian government’s Under-16 Social Media Ban and described it as “not a win for anyone”.
