Elijah Zion Bieniemy(Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office)
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been arrested and charged after authorities say he shot his own mother, Mia Bieniemy, inside the family’s Ashburn, Virginia home.
Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 7:32 p.m. Sunday night in the 20000 block of Northpark Drive in the One Loudoun neighborhood.
When they arrived, they found 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
According to reports, Mia Bieniemy was shot in the chest and arm. She is the one who called 911 after the shooting. Officials say she remains in stable condition.
Elijah Bieniemy was taken into custody and charged with:
Malicious wounding
Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
Discharging a firearm inside a dwelling
He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Eric Bieniemy was at Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri at the time of the incident. He has since stepped away from the team to be with his family.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation Monday, saying the team’s hearts go out to Eric and the family and that Mia is stable, according to ESPN.
“These kinds of things happen, but there’s always a blessing in there somewhere,” Reid said. “I know things will work out. The most important thing is that EB has an opportunity to spend some time [with his family] and take care of that business. Everybody loves EB. He’s a great person.
“Things happen. You have to work through it, and time will have to be involved in this to help heal a little bit. It’ll all work out in the long run.”
The Chiefs released a brief statement: “The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Eric Bieniemy previously served as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders and has a long history with the Chiefs organization. The family still owns the Ashburn home from his time coaching in the D.C. area.
