Two bins of mail containing 92 undelivered ballots for the upcoming midterm election were discovered in a dumpster at Golden Gardens Park in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood.
The discovery comes less than two weeks before Election Day on November 3 in a state that relies heavily on mail-in voting.
The person who found the tossed ballots contacted King County Elections customer service to report what they saw.
King County Elections staffers then went to the park and found the bins.
Kendall Hodson, King County Elections Chief of Staff, told the Seattle Times the ballots were undelivered and unused.

The county reported the incident to the Postal Service, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is investigating.
Seattle police officers also checked 26 additional trash bins across two parking lots at the park and found no more ballots.
“We tend to hear about a handful of incidents of where ballots are tossed after mail theft in each big election,” Hodson stated.
The Postal Service issued a statement saying it is “fully committed to the secure and timely delivery of the nation’s Election Mail” and that the USPS Office of the Inspector General is handling the matter.
King County Elections spokesperson Halei Watkins said that every voter has a unique voter ID, and every ballot has its own ballot ID, with only one accepted per voter.
Signature verification is performed on every returned ballot by workers trained by the Washington State Patrol. If a signature raises questions, workers are supposed to hold the ballot and contact the voter to resolve the issue before certification.
Watkins claimed that even if someone tried to cast a discarded ballot, it would be rejected.
Officials said all affected voters have already received replacement ballots, but those who haven’t can call King County Elections at 206-296-8683 or request a replacement online.
