VICTORIA Labor Premier Daniel Andrews has been hammered in a new opinion poll with his handling of COVID-19 being judged the worst in the nation – by far.
Of five mainland States, confidence in Victoria’s response to the Wuhan pandemic has been ranked last with daylight to spare.
Within a matter of weeks, Andrews’ rating plummeted from among the highest in the nation at 75 per cent to the worst at a distant 47 per cent.
The poll was published by Essential Research and covers the period from May 11 until August 24, 2020.
The poll shows approval of Andrews’ response was consistently high until June 15, when a second wave hit and confidence in his ability to handle the situation collapsed.
Within a week, approval of his response to the pandemic dropped 10 points from 75 per cent to 65 per cent. A week later it had crashed by 26 points to 49 per cent.
And it didn’t recover – in fact it continued to drop, though more slowly.
Sitting at 47 per cent this week, Victoria sits behind highly-rated Western Australia (84 per cent), Queensland (73 per cent), South Australia (64 per cent) and error prone NSW at 59 per cent.
That Andrews was attempting to play political games when his government lost control of the virus has resulted in scathing criticism and anger across Australia.
With nearly 18,600 Victorian cases and 462 deaths to date, Andrews’ double outbreak is largely blamed on his rejection of Commonwealth quarantine assistance – instead recruiting poorly trained unionised and “racially selected” guards.
It turned out these “guards” were more interested in running halal errands for – and bedding – their charges than keeping the Victorian community safe.
By comparison, the rest of Australia has recorded 6600 cases and 71 deaths to date.
